Spanish Startup Lizcore Revolutionizes Indoor Climbing with Tech-Driven Safety and Gamification
A Spanish startup is set to transform the indoor climbing experience with innovative technology that addresses both safety concerns and performance-tracking challenges. Lizcore, founded by climbing enthusiasts Javier Coloma and Sergio Verdasco, has developed a system that combines NFC bracelets, smart holds, and AI-powered cameras to create a safer and more engaging climbing environment.
The company’s technology utilizes NFC bracelets worn by climbers to interact with smart base units and top-out holds, capturing route statistics and tracking progress. This data is then synced with Lizcore’s app, allowing climbers to monitor their performance and engage in social gamification aspects of the sport.
Lizcore recently secured €600,000 in pre-seed funding, with support from accelerator Startup Wise Guys and state backing. The startup has already acquired its first customer, Drac de Pedra climbing gym in Rubí, where they plan to install and demonstrate their technology.
In addition to route tracking, Lizcore is focusing on developing a safety device for autobelays, a critical component in indoor climbing facilities. The company aims to complete this device within 6-12 months, addressing the challenges associated with autobelay systems and their potential risks.
The startup’s approach to improving autobelay safety involves using NFC bands for digital credential verification and implementing smart locking systems. This technology ensures that only authorized and properly equipped climbers can access the autobelay systems.
Lizcore is also integrating AI and camera technology to enhance safety measures. A dual-camera setup will monitor climbers, ensuring they are correctly clipped into the autobelay system. An alarm will alert staff if a climber is detected as unclipped, adding an extra layer of protection.
The company’s focus on safety addresses a growing concern in the climbing industry, potentially reducing legal liabilities for gym operators. By combining these safety features with gamification and route tracking, Lizcore aims to meet the diverse demands of climbing gyms and their patrons.
As Lizcore continues to develop its technology, the startup faces challenges in ensuring compatibility with various autobelay brands and refining its AI software for accurate safety monitoring. The company is expanding its team to support these development efforts and drive commercialization.
