Square Enix Unveils ‘Final Fantasy XIV Mobile’ in Collaboration with Tencent
Square Enix has officially announced the development of ‘Final Fantasy XIV Mobile,’ a mobile adaptation of their popular MMORPG. The project, revealed through a video announcement by game director Naoki Yoshida, is a joint production between Square Enix and Tencent’s Lightspeed Studios. A teaser trailer showcased Warriors of Light exploring the familiar landscapes of Eorzea, igniting excitement among fans.
The mobile version will be a reset of the MMORPG, focusing on content from the base game and excluding expansions. Players can expect a faithful recreation of the original’s story, duties, and battle content, albeit with simplified combat controls and chibi-fied character art to suit the mobile platform.
Lightspeed Studios, known for successful mobile adaptations like ‘PUBG Mobile’ and their work on IPs such as ‘Monster Hunter,’ ‘Pokémon,’ and ‘Call of Duty,’ bring their expertise to this ambitious project. Their involvement suggests a high-quality mobile experience that aims to capture the essence of the original game.
Gameplay mechanics have been tailored for mobile devices, with players having access to nine job classes and the ability to switch between them with a single tap. This streamlined approach is reminiscent of ‘Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition,’ which successfully brought a console experience to mobile platforms.
‘Final Fantasy XIV Mobile’ will adopt a free-to-play model, notably avoiding gacha elements. Monetization is expected to focus on cosmetic items such as mounts and player costumes, addressing the importance of glamour and customization in the ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ community.
