Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service in California Amid Growing Concerns
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Alphabet Inc., is set to expand its robotaxi service in California, targeting areas including the East Bay, San Jose, and highways around San Francisco Bay. The expansion has already begun, with Waymo vehicles now operating in surrounding San Francisco communities such as Daly City.
This move comes after a year of operating as a paid service in San Francisco without major incidents, according to the company. Waymo currently operates in Phoenix, Arizona, and has a limited presence in Los Angeles.
However, the expansion plans are not without controversy. Local communities and activists have expressed significant concerns about the increase in autonomous vehicles on their streets. Recent reports have highlighted incidents of Waymo taxis honking at each other in parking lots at night, disturbing residents.
Despite Waymo’s claims of success, there have been reports of vehicles driving the wrong way and crashes, leading to recalls and federal investigations. Over two dozen incidents involving Waymo have been reported, causing concern among residents and community advocates.
The scrutiny extends beyond Waymo, with General Motors recently recalling its Cruise robotaxis following federal investigations into pedestrian injuries. A coalition of San Franciscans, labor, and traffic safety activists is now petitioning Governor Gavin Newsom to ban robotaxis in the city.
Despite these challenges, Waymo remains committed to its expansion plans. The company’s long-term goals include integrating its technology into delivery vehicles, long-haul trucks, and personal vehicles, aiming to be a significant player in the autonomous vehicle industry.
