Texas Event Company Pioneers Generous Maternity Leave Policy
Brigade Events, a Texas-based event strategy and management company, has implemented a groundbreaking 16-week maternity leave policy, setting a new standard in an industry known for its demanding schedules and limited time off for new mothers.
Justine Sterling Converse, founder of Brigade Events and former director of strategic programming at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, spearheaded the initiative after recognizing the need for a robust maternity leave policy within her growing company.
“As we faced multiple pregnancies among our staff, it became clear that we needed a comprehensive approach to support our team members during this crucial time,” Converse stated.
The policy, which includes 16 weeks of leave partially funded by short-term disability benefits, also features an additional transition month at 50% work and pay. This progressive approach was developed after extensive research into parental leave practices, drawing inspiration from European standards and top companies offering extended leave.
Brigade Events has taken innovative steps to finance this policy, combining state-paid leave programs with PTO payments and assisting employees in applying for short-term disability. The company currently offers 11 weeks of paid leave, with additional coverage through state benefits.
“We’re committed to adding a week of paid leave for every profitable year,” Converse explained. “It’s an investment in our team and our future.”
The implementation of this policy has not been without challenges. In 2024, four out of ten full-time employees, including Converse herself, were on maternity leave simultaneously. This required careful management of workloads and strategic decisions to maintain company operations.
Despite the sacrifices, including declining projects and hiring contractors to cover workloads, Converse believes in the long-term benefits of strong maternity policies. “It’s crucial for attracting and retaining talented women in our industry,” she emphasized.
As the event management sector continues to evolve, Brigade Events’ progressive approach to maternity leave may serve as a model for other companies seeking to create more supportive and inclusive work environments.
