Uber CEO Steps Down from Aurora Innovation Board

Dara Khosrowshahi, the Chief Executive Officer of Uber Technologies Inc., has resigned from the board of directors of Aurora Innovation, a self-driving technology company. The decision, effective as of Tuesday, was disclosed in a regulatory filing on Friday. According to Aurora, Khosrowshahi’s departure is aimed at allowing him to focus on his responsibilities at Uber and reduce his external commitments.

The relationship between Uber and Aurora dates back to 2020 when Uber sold its self-driving unit, Uber ATG, to Aurora. As part of the deal, Uber invested $400 million in Aurora, acquiring a 26% stake in the company. Khosrowshahi joined Aurora’s board as a result of this transaction.

Despite Khosrowshahi’s resignation, Uber maintains ties with Aurora through its freight division. In June, the companies announced a multi-year collaboration to deploy Aurora-powered trucks on the Uber Freight network. Uber has also been working with Waabi, another self-driving truck startup, to diversify its autonomous vehicle partnerships.

Following Khosrowshahi’s departure, Aurora has appointed Shailen Bhatt to its board. Bhatt brings valuable experience from his work with the Federal Highway Administration. In addition to this change, Aurora announced that its general counsel, Nolan Shenai, will be stepping down in January 2025. Ossa Fisher, Aurora’s president, will temporarily assume Shenai’s responsibilities.

These developments come amid a period of transition for Aurora’s executive team and board structure. The company continues to navigate the competitive landscape of autonomous vehicle technology while maintaining strategic partnerships with industry leaders like Uber.
