Evaluating US Response to Chinese Tariffs Unrelated to Trade Negotiations Progress – Deputy USTR

The United States is not expecting a “breakthrough” in trade relations with China to determine the outcome of its review of tariffs on Chinese goods. Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi stated that the US will be taking an analytical approach when reviewing whether or not to keep tariffs in place, and it won’t depend on any breakthroughs between both countries.

This news comes after President Donald Trump’s administration has been pushing for better terms from Beijing before signing a long-awaited trade deal between both nations in 2018, which included imposing additional tariffs worth billions of dollars on Chinese imports into the US market as part of their negotiations tactics.

Bianchi also added that while there are still some issues left unresolved, they have made progress and are continuing talks with China over other areas, such as intellectual property rights protection and enforcement mechanisms for any potential agreement reached by both sides to ensure compliance moving forward if needed. She noted that these discussions could potentially lead up to further tariff reductions but did not provide specifics regarding what those would look like at this time given their current review process underway right now.
