Delta Airlines to Extend Life of Expiring Travel Vouchers

Delta Air Lines said Wednesday that it will extend the window for customers to rebook credits earned when they purchased but then canceled flights during the pandemic.

All Delta flight credits were set to expire at the end of 2022. The new date will also apply to all tickets bought in 2022, regardless of when they are used.

The airline said that customers will use the credits throughout 2024 if the trip is booked by December 31, 2023. This move was not matched by American Airlines or United Airlines, who set their expiration dates for March 31 and December 31, respectively.

If a passenger’s flight is canceled, they are entitled to a refund under federal law. However, if the passenger cancels their reservation, airlines generally only offer credits or vouchers that expire within one year.

Airlines have been struggling to refund customers for their costs recently, with the U.S. Department of Transportation reporting that this is one of the main sources of consumer complaints. To try and solve this issue, Congress is considering a new bill that would require airlines to cover the cost of lodging, meals, and other essentials when they cancel a flight.
