US Military’s Secret Space Plane Performs Groundbreaking Maneuvers
The X-37B, the US military’s top-secret space plane, has been orbiting Earth since December 2023, engaging in advanced aerobraking maneuvers as part of its current mission. These maneuvers aim to lower the spacecraft’s highly elliptical orbit without excessive fuel consumption.
Boeing Space recently released a video detailing the aerobraking process, which utilizes atmospheric drag to reduce orbit altitude. Boeing engineer John Ealy explained, “Aerobraking allows us to use friction from Earth’s atmosphere to save propellant, significantly extending the spacecraft’s mission duration.”
Renders from the video show the spaceplane’s underbelly glowing during these maneuvers, reminiscent of the heat generated during SpaceX’s Starship test flights. This visual representation highlights the intense forces at play during the aerobraking process.
While details about the X-37B’s overall mission remain scarce, it is known that the spacecraft was launched on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in December 2023 as part of the Orbital Test Vehicle-7 (OTV-7) mission. The plane’s highly elliptical orbit includes passages above geosynchronous orbit, adding to the intrigue surrounding its purpose.
Holly Murphy, a Boeing representative, stated, “These maneuvers represent a significant step forward in advancing our space capabilities.” Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall praised the aerobraking technique as groundbreaking, while Chief of Space Operations General Chance Saltzman emphasized its importance for the Space Force.
“The success of this maneuver is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team,” Saltzman added, underscoring the significance of this achievement in space exploration and military operations.
As the X-37B continues its mysterious mission, the successful implementation of aerobraking techniques opens new possibilities for extended space operations and resource management in orbit.
