The Curious Case of Monkeys and Neuralink: A Tale of Technological Evolution
Elon Musk’s brainchild, Neuralink, has made headlines by implanting its groundbreaking brain chips into a human subject. In a chilling incident, a brain chip broke off during implantation, leading to a fatal infection in one of the macaques, ultimately resulting in euthanasia. Shockingly, around 21 percent of these animals met their demise due to complications arising from the brain implants.
The monkeys used in Neuralink’s early trials were acquired from the California National Primate Research Center, with most of the experiments taking place between 2019 and 2020. Investors in the company were seemingly kept in the dark about the grim realities of the testing procedures. Pressure has mounted on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate whether Neuralink and its enigmatic founder, Elon Musk, deliberately concealed the troubling outcomes of the macaque trials from stakeholders.
While the SEC’s stance on launching a probe into Neuralink remains uncertain, past scrutiny of the company’s testing practices has been evident. Earlier investigations highlighted a lack of transparency in disclosing crucial information about the experiments, especially regarding the risks involved in the human trials. The need for comprehensive disclosure before soliciting funds and recruiting volunteers for potentially hazardous brain surgeries has been a focal point of the criticism leveled against Neuralink.
