Tesla Recalls 200,000+ Vehicles: Safety Features at Risk Due to Computer Glitch

Tesla Recalls Over 200,000 Vehicles Due to Computer Hardware Issue

Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced a recall of more than 200,000 vehicles due to a computer hardware issue affecting critical safety features, including the rearview camera. The recall encompasses several popular models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, manufactured between January 25th, 2023, and December 16th, 2024.

This latest recall comes in response to non-compliance with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) rearview camera reliability standards. It follows similar recalls in January 2024 and October, which also addressed issues related to rearview cameras. Those previous recalls were successfully resolved through over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

To address the current recall, Tesla has initiated an OTA update rollout that began on December 18th. Newly manufactured vehicles have been receiving the update since December 16th. However, it’s important to note that this OTA update does not fully resolve the broader computer hardware issue linked to Tesla’s latest HW4 (AI4) computers.

The severity of the problem is underscored by the 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports filed about this issue. In response, Tesla has announced plans to replace computers in vehicles not fixed by the OTA update. This replacement is crucial for the company’s transition to full autonomy and may have implications for Tesla’s plans, including the development of a robotaxi service.

As Tesla continues to address these challenges, the recall serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in advancing automotive technology while maintaining stringent safety standards.
