XXL Televisions Gain Traction as Holiday Season Approaches
In a significant shift from the once-popular 65-inch televisions, consumers are now gravitating towards screens that exceed 8 feet in width. While these supersize TVs currently represent a small portion of the market, industry experts anticipate a surge in demand as the holiday season approaches.
According to data from Circana, supersize TVs account for 1.7% of total TV sales revenue. Notably, sales of televisions 97 inches or larger have experienced a tenfold increase. Responding to this trend, Best Buy has doubled its offerings of XXL TV models and introduced displays in 70% of its stores.
The growing demand for larger screens is partly attributed to decreasing prices. Samsung, for instance, has significantly reduced the cost of its 98-inch QLED TV since 2019. Consumers like Anthony Ash, who recently purchased a 98-inch Sony TV, report enhanced viewing experiences with larger screens.
Technological advancements have also played a crucial role in this trend. Improved resolution and production capabilities have made larger screens more appealing. Samsung has introduced new components designed to enhance sharpness and reduce noise in large TVs.
Changing consumer behavior, influenced by increased screen time on mobile devices, has contributed to the preference for larger TV sizes. There’s a noticeable shift towards shared viewing experiences, with many consumers hosting watch parties and creating cinematic experiences at home.
While XXL TVs compete with home theater projectors, they offer advantages in terms of sharpness and convenience. Industry experts note that the trend spans various demographics, from millennials to Gen Z, though space limitations remain a factor in adoption.
For potential buyers, ensuring adequate space for installation is crucial. Best Buy’s Geek Squad and augmented reality app assist customers in this regard. Samsung recommends a viewing distance of 13 feet for optimal experience with a 98-inch TV.
As the market for XXL televisions continues to evolve, speculation abounds regarding the potential for even larger screens in the future, with ongoing developments fueling consumer interest.
