Revolutionizing Representation: The Entrepreneur Reshaping Black Seattle
As we celebrate Black History Month this February, it’s crucial to shine a light on the Black experience in the United States. One remarkable entrepreneur leading the charge in amplifying the Black community’s voice is Kiesha Garrison, the visionary behind Hey, Black Seattle. In a recent interview, Kiesha shared her motivation for starting Hey, Black Seattle, emphasizing the misconception that Seattle lacks a significant Black population. Despite being outnumbered by white residents, the Black community in the broader Puget Sound region is vibrant and diverse, yet often feels isolated.
Kiesha’s journey with Hey, Black Seattle began in June 2023, inspired by her own quest to connect with Seattle’s Black arts scene. Drawing from her experience at Microsoft, where she witnessed the efforts of Employee Resource Group leaders to support Black professionals, Kiesha recognized the need for a central platform dedicated to fostering community among Black residents in the area. Hey, Black Seattle’s events calendar serves as a vital resource, offering a centralized space for people to discover and share events that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The economic disparities faced by Black households in Seattle are stark, with a median income of $41,300—significantly lower than the city’s overall median income of $115,400. Gentrification has further fractured historically Black neighborhoods, highlighting the urgent need for initiatives like Hey, Black Seattle that aim to bridge divides and cultivate a sense of belonging. Beyond its role in event coordination, Hey, Black Seattle also functions as a welcoming committee for newcomers, introducing them to the city’s neighborhoods and helping them acclimate to their new home.
