Nvidia Unveils Project Digits, Signals Entry into Consumer CPU Market
In a move that has been widely anticipated by industry insiders, Nvidia has taken a significant step toward entering the consumer CPU market. At CES 2025, the company unveiled Project Digits, a personal AI supercomputer priced at $3,000, featuring the new GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang provided insights into the company’s broader plans for the Arm-based CPU within the super chip, which was co-developed with MediaTek. While Project Digits is primarily aimed at AI developers and comes with a custom Linux system, the inclusion of a new 20-core desktop CPU suggests Nvidia’s potential expansion into the wider consumer CPU market.
The collaboration with MediaTek appears to be a strategic move for both companies. Huang described the partnership as mutually beneficial, allowing each to serve the market effectively. MediaTek may also bring the CPU to market independently, further expanding its reach.
This development aligns with industry trends reported in October 2023, which hinted at Nvidia’s consumer CPU ambitions. The move comes at a time when Qualcomm dominates the Arm-based CPU market for Windows PCs with its Snapdragon X Elite processors.
The success of Windows on Arm in 2024 has set the stage for increased competition in 2025, potentially shifting the balance between x86 and Arm architectures. As Nvidia enters this competitive landscape, industry observers will be watching closely to see how this move impacts the consumer CPU market.
