Two large pieces of space debris just barely missed a catastrophic collision in Earth’s orbit. LeoLabs, a tracking company, reported that an old Soviet-era rocket body almost collided with an errant military satellite. Had the two objects come into contact with each other, it would have resulted in a major disaster for both parties involved and could have caused further damage to our planet’s atmosphere.
The potential collision was detected by LeoLabs’ worldwide network of radars which are used to track satellites and other objects orbiting the Earth at high speeds. The organization calculated that there were only about 50 meters between the two objects when they passed each other on January 29th, 2021; had they been any closer together, one or both of them would likely have been destroyed upon impact due to their immense size and speed relative to one another.
Although this incident ended without any physical harm being done, it serves as yet another reminder of how important it is for us all – governments included – to be mindful about what we launch into space so as not to cause such close calls from happening again in future years ahead! We must take responsibility now before something more serious happens down the line if we want our planet
