Microsoft Announces End of Support for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10
Microsoft has revealed plans to discontinue support for Microsoft 365 applications on Windows 10, aligning with the operating system’s end-of-support date on October 14, 2025. This move signals a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy, pushing users towards upgrading to Windows 11 to maintain full functionality and support for essential productivity tools.
While Microsoft 365 apps will continue to function on Windows 10 after the support cutoff, users may experience performance and reliability issues. Microsoft emphasizes that upgrading to Windows 11 is crucial for optimal performance and continued support.
The tech giant is positioning 2025 as a pivotal year for Windows 11 PC upgrades. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft highlighted the importance of refreshing Windows 10 PCs over other tech upgrades. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer, stressed the urgency for users to transition to the newer operating system.
However, the push for Windows 11 adoption faces challenges. Adoption rates for Windows 11 have been notably lower compared to its predecessor, Windows 10. A significant factor contributing to this slower uptake is the strict hardware requirements for Windows 11, including the need for TPM 2.0, which renders many devices ineligible for the upgrade.
To encourage upgrades, Microsoft has implemented aggressive strategies, including full-screen prompts for Windows 10 users, urging them to consider purchasing new PCs. The company remains firm on not supporting older hardware for Windows 11, maintaining its stance on enhanced security and performance standards.
Recognizing the potential impact on users unable to upgrade, Microsoft has introduced Extended Security Updates for Windows 10. This program allows consumers to purchase an additional year of updates for $30, while businesses have the option to extend support for up to three years.
As the 2025 deadline approaches, the tech community will be closely watching how this transition unfolds and its impact on both individual users and businesses relying on Microsoft’s ecosystem.
