Meta takes new AI system offline because Twitter users are mean

Meta’s new scientific AI system generated fake research papers on the benefits of committing suicide, practicing antisemitism, and eating crushed glass. The European Union’s AI Act was designed to prevent the kind of thing that the EU’s AI Act is designed. The system we’re talking about is called Galactica. It was created by Meta with the explicit claim that it could aid scientific research. The company’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun appears to think that the solution to the problem is out of his hands. He appears to insist that the AI doesn’t have the potential to cause harm unless journalists or scientists misuse it. To this I submit that it wasn’t the poor work of Cambridge Analytica. . . .
