President Joe Biden, a seasoned politician with over three decades of experience in the Senate and eight years as Vice President, recently encountered something that caught him off guard: ChatGPT. Biden was reportedly astonished by the AI’s capabilities, exclaiming, “Wow, I can’t believe it could do that,” showing a mix of surprise and amusement.
However, Biden’s initial fascination with generative AI quickly gave way to a sense of responsibility and concern. Prabhakar recounted how Biden raised questions about the potential risks associated with AI during a subsequent discussion with the team. This led to the formulation and signing of a comprehensive executive order in October, mandating that major tech companies adhere to specific safety protocols, report their activities to the federal government, and disclose their testing outcomes.
Politico reported that Biden emphasized the significance of AI in a meeting with his cabinet, stressing that the technology would impact the operations of every government department and agency. He highlighted the importance of the United States taking the lead in regulating and guiding the development of AI, stating, “The rest of the world is looking to us to lead the way.”
