Medical professionals, patient advocates, bioethicists, and former FDA commissioner Robert Califf have warned that turning investigational drug trials into tradable contracts risks transforming a fragile public good—clinical research participation—into a venue for speculation. The most pointed critics label the concept a “death market,” arguing that it monetizes failure in a domain where failure can mean delayed treatments, lost hope, and diminished trust in science.
What makes this episode strategically important for business and technology leaders is not only the controversy itself, but what it reveals: a collision between fintech product design and biomedical ethics, with regulators potentially split across mandates and jurisdictions.
When “price discovery” meets reflexivity in human-subject research
Prediction markets are often defended on their empirical track record: aggregated wagers can outperform polls or punditry in forecasting discrete events.
