DJI Unveils Osmo Action 5 Pro, Challenging GoPro’s Latest Offering
DJI has launched its latest action camera, the Osmo Action 5 Pro, in a direct response to GoPro’s recently announced Hero 13 lineup. The new camera boasts significant upgrades, including a new image sensor that promises enhanced image quality and improved low-light performance.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro introduces several key features, such as a built-in pressure sensor, 1080p/960fps super slow motion capabilities, and a power-efficient 4nm chip. At the heart of the device is a 1/1.3-inch sensor that captures 40-megapixel stills and offers a 13.5-stop dynamic range for 4K/60fps video. The impressive 960fps slow motion is achieved through intelligent frame generation, capturing at 240fps and interpolating additional frames.
Battery life has been a focus for DJI, with the 1,950mAh battery supporting up to four hours of continuous recording under specific conditions. These tests were conducted at 77 degrees Fahrenheit with 1080p/24fps video, Rocksteady stabilization enabled, Wi-Fi off, and both displays turned off. However, real-world performance, especially with 4K capture, remains to be evaluated. The camera is designed to operate reliably in temperatures ranging from -4F to 113F, with a runtime of 3.6 hours at the lower extreme.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro features larger OLED displays on both the front and back, replacing the previous dual LCD setup. These OLED displays offer richer and more vibrant colors, enhancing the user experience. The camera also comes with 47GB of fast built-in storage, allowing users to start capturing footage immediately out of the box.
Audio capabilities have been expanded with support for DJI Mic 2 Bluetooth microphones, ideal for capturing interview audio. Additional features include waterproofing down to 20 meters, 4k/120fps capture in 4:3 aspect ratio, Wi-Fi 6, and USB 3.0 connectivity. The camera also introduces in-camera 360-degree horizon lock and a new feature for centering and tracking human subjects in video.
While the Osmo Action 5 Pro does not include built-in GPS, location data and sports tracking can be added with compatible devices such as DJI’s Osmo Action GPS Bluetooth Remote Controller.
The Osmo Action 5 Pro is available starting today, with prices beginning at $349 / £329 / €379 for the standard combo kit. This kit includes a horizontal-vertical protective frame, battery, USB-C cable, and various mounting and cleaning accessories.
As DJI enters the market with this feature-packed offering, the action camera landscape becomes increasingly competitive, giving consumers more options in the high-performance segment.
