Canon Unveils Affordable Dual Lens for 3D VR Content Creation
Canon has announced the release of its new RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual lens, a groundbreaking product designed specifically for 3D virtual reality (VR) content creation. Compatible with the Canon EOS R7 camera, this lens is set to revolutionize the way creators produce content for popular devices such as Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro.
Priced at $449.99 and scheduled for release in November 2024, the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual lens offers a more affordable alternative to Canon’s existing dual-fisheye lenses. This move is expected to make professional-grade VR content creation more accessible to a wider range of creators.
The lens boasts an aperture range from f/4.0 to f/16 and supports autofocus with manual focus adjustments. While it features a limited field of view at 63 degrees compared to the 180 degrees found in pricier models, the lens is designed for ease of use with minimal controls.
Utilizing a standard Canon RF mount, the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual lens incorporates stereoscopic elements aligned in a straight optical path. The front lenses are positioned 11.8mm apart, optimizing the 3D effect for subjects between 6 to 20 inches away from the camera.
Post-processing is required to prepare content for VR or AR viewing. The lens is compatible with the EOS VR plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro, and Canon’s EOS VR Utility software is available for both Mac and PC users. However, it’s worth noting that both software options require a paid subscription.
With this latest offering, Canon aims to empower content creators and expand the possibilities of immersive storytelling in the rapidly evolving world of virtual and augmented reality.
