Biden Confronts Musk Over Immigration: Tech Giant Faces Allegations of Illegal Workers

President Biden Challenges Musk on Immigration Stance Amid Work Visa Controversy

President Joe Biden has publicly criticized tech billionaire Elon Musk for alleged hypocrisy on immigration issues, citing a recent report that claims Musk once worked illegally in the United States. The comments, made during a campaign event in Pittsburgh, have reignited discussions about immigration policies and their enforcement.

Biden questioned Musk’s current stance on immigration, given the allegations about his history with visa issues. “It’s interesting to hear Mr. Musk’s views on immigration now, considering his own reported experiences,” the President remarked.

The controversy stems from a Washington Post report suggesting that Musk, who is originally from South Africa, worked illegally while on a student visa in 1995. According to the report, Musk arrived in Palo Alto for a Stanford graduate program but did not enroll, instead focusing on his startup.

Musk has vehemently denied these allegations on social media, accusing President Biden of spreading misinformation. “I was legally permitted to work in the U.S. at that time,” Musk stated in a post.

However, the situation is complicated by past legal documents. A 2005 email from Musk, submitted as evidence in a previous lawsuit, acknowledged his lack of authorization to be in the U.S. when starting Zip2, his early company. This revelation has raised concerns among investors about potential legal repercussions.

The controversy has political implications beyond immigration policy. Musk, now the world’s richest individual, has been a significant donor to Republican campaigns, including those of former President Donald Trump. He has also been active on the campaign trail, often aligning with Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric.

Trump has hinted at a potential role for Musk in his administration if re-elected, further highlighting the political dimensions of this issue.

As of now, Musk’s companies, X and Tesla, have not provided immediate comments regarding these allegations. The situation continues to evolve, with potential impacts on both the tech industry and the ongoing political discourse surrounding immigration in the United States.
