Apple’s New Crash Detection Feature: Saving Lives with Automatic Emergency Alerts

New Smartphone Feature Aims to Save Lives in Car Crashes

A groundbreaking safety feature is now available on the latest smartphones and smartwatches, designed to detect car crashes and automatically alert emergency services. This innovative technology, known as Crash Detection, is currently offered on iPhones running iOS 16 or later, starting with the iPhone 14 series. It is also available on Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2, Apple Watch Ultra, and newer models.

To utilize this potentially life-saving feature, users must have a device running watchOS 9 or later and maintain a cellular connection, either built into the device or via a connected iPhone. The system employs sophisticated movement sensors to detect driving patterns and sudden stops indicative of a crash.

In the event of a detected collision, the device initiates an alert system. An audible alarm sounds, and an emergency call alert appears on the device screen. If both an iPhone and Apple Watch are present, priority is given to the watch. Users are presented with a sliding SOS control and a cancel button, allowing them to quickly summon help or dismiss false alarms.

Should the user fail to respond within 20 seconds, the device automatically places an emergency call. This crucial feature ensures that help is dispatched even if the user is incapacitated or unable to respond.

The importance of this technology cannot be overstated. By providing an additional layer of safety during car accidents, Crash Detection offers peace of mind to users and their families. As road safety continues to be a global concern, this innovative feature represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to protect lives on the road.
