Google Wear OS 5.1 Brings Speaker Playback and Credential Support to Smartwatches

Google Expands Smartwatch Capabilities with Wear OS 5.1 Update

Google is set to enhance the functionality of Android smartwatches with its upcoming Wear OS 5.1 update. The tech giant is currently testing a feature that would allow media playback through the built-in speakers of compatible devices, a significant departure from the current Bluetooth-only audio output.

The update, which builds upon the Android 14-based Wear OS 5 released earlier, will introduce support for credential managers, drawing inspiration from Android 15. This new capability will be available on devices that support media playback through the watch speaker, giving users the option to choose the built-in speaker for compatible apps.

In comparison, Apple Watches have only recently expanded beyond Bluetooth-only media playback with the introduction of the Series 10 and Ultra 2 models. Google’s move appears to be a strategic step to keep pace with its competitors in the smartwatch market.

Pixel Watch users can expect to receive this new functionality with a software update scheduled for March next year. Interestingly, some users had previously experienced media playback on their Pixel Watches due to a bug, which was subsequently patched. The fix led to disappointment among some users who had grown accustomed to the feature, particularly those who enjoyed listening to podcasts directly from their watches.

As Google continues to refine its smartwatch offerings, this update represents a significant step forward in providing users with more versatile and convenient audio options. The company’s responsiveness to user preferences suggests a commitment to enhancing the overall smartwatch experience for Android users.
