Uncovering US Military’s Plan to Leverage Deepfakes for Psychological Warfare

The US Military’s Special Operations Command (SOCOM) is looking to leverage deepfakes in its psychological operations campaigns. Deepfakes are a form of artificial intelligence-generated media, which can be used to create realistic audio and video content that appears genuine but has been manipulated or altered. SOCOM wants to use this technology for disinformation campaigns, where false information is spread with the intent of manipulating public opinion or behavior.

This would allow them to target specific audiences with tailored messages to influence their opinions and actions without detection. For example, they could create videos featuring political leaders making statements that appear real but were fabricated by the military using deepfake technology. This could potentially lead people astray from the truth and sow confusion among viewers who may not be able to recognize it as fake news if it looks authentic enough at first glance.

Deepfakes have become increasingly popular over recent years due largely in part because they are difficult for most people to spot unless you know what signs look out for when trying to detect them – such as unnatural facial expressions or movements that don’t match up with real-life scenarios – which makes them an ideal tool for psy-op efforts like those being considered by SOCOM. It remains unclear how far along these plans have progressed however one thing is certain: The US Military will continue exploring ways to utilize AI technologies like deepfakes to further their agenda going forward.
