Sony has reportedly cut its sales estimates for the PlayStation VR2 headset in half, according to a new report. The company was previously expecting to sell two million units of the device during this quarter, but now only anticipates selling one million.
The news comes as Sony is preparing to launch its next-generation console later this year and could be indicative of waning interest in virtual reality technology among consumers. It also casts doubt on whether or not the PSVR2 will be able to compete with other upcoming headsets from Microsoft and Facebook’s Oculus division when it launches later this year.
Despite these lowered expectations, Sony remains confident that they can still make a success out of their latest product offering. They are banking on an improved design over previous iterations which should help attract more users who may have been put off by earlier models’ bulky form factor or lacklustre performance specs compared with rival devices like HTC’s Vive Pro 2 headset or Valve Index system. Additionally, Sony is hoping that exclusive content such as games developed specifically for use with PSVR2 will entice customers into making a purchase despite any reservations about virtual reality technology overall.
