Intel Retires Network Switch Business and Discontinues RISC-V Pathfinder Program

Intel has announced the end of two major projects. The first is their network switch business, which will no longer be developed further. The second project to be discontinued is the RISC-V Pathfinder program, which was ended without any prior notice or announcement from Intel.

The network switch business had been a part of Intel’s portfolio for some time and its discontinuation marks a significant shift in strategy for the company. This decision comes at an interesting time as many companies are investing heavily into networking technology due to its increasing importance in modern computing systems and applications.

The sudden ending of the RISC-V Pathfinder program also raises questions about Intel’s plans going forward with regards to processor architectures and open source software development initiatives such as this one have become increasingly popular over recent years. It remains unclear why Intel chose not to continue this particular effort but it could signal that they are looking towards other avenues when it comes to processor design and architecture innovation moving forward.
