As of late, Vladimir Putin’s government has implemented a new policy for western companies looking to depart Russia and sell their properties in the country. Under this policy, these companies will now be required to make a straight donation to the Russian government before they are allowed to leave. The amount of money requested by the government is yet unknown but it is expected that it could range from hundreds of thousands up to millions depending on how much property or assets each company holds within Russia.
This move by President Putin has been met with criticism from many foreign governments who believe that this requirement should not exist as it goes against international law and regulations surrounding free trade between nations. Furthermore, some have argued that such an act could be seen as extortion, which would only further damage relations between Russia and other countries around the world.
Despite all this backlash however, President Putin remains adamant about his decision claiming that such donations are necessary for his nation’s economy to continue growing at its current rate while also providing more jobs for citizens living in rural parts of Russia where economic opportunities may otherwise be limited or nonexistent altogether.
