Microsoft has finally lifted the veil on the much-anticipated features coming in the next Windows 11 update, dubbed the “Official” list. While some of these features were already hinted at in previous preview releases, Microsoft’s recent announcement sheds light on what users can expect to see on their Windows 11 PCs in the near future.
The February 2024 Moment update was initially the target timeline for these new features to roll out, but Microsoft has missed this window. Now, users can look forward to receiving the updates in two potential timeframes. The first option is during the March 2024 optional non-security preview release, provided users have opted in to receive updates promptly. Microsoft reassures that “most of these new features will be available then,” with broader availability expected by the April 2024 security update release.
Interestingly, Microsoft is refraining from labeling this release as a “Moment” or “Update,” opting instead for a more straightforward approach by simply referring to it as a release of new features. These features, known as “Copilot Skills,” are scheduled for rollout in late March. Among the additions are task-specific Copilots like a vacation planner, cooking assistant, and fitness trainer, along with plugins from OpenTable to streamline reservations.
In a separate blog post, Microsoft highlighted additional smaller features that users can look forward to. These include the ability to share files via preferred apps for work or personal accounts, promising faster sharing capabilities than ever before. However, notably absent from Microsoft’s recent announcements are details regarding its plans for the EU, particularly concerning the freedom to remove default Windows apps, including Microsoft Edge.
Looking ahead, Microsoft is poised to continue its momentum with more AI-powered updates anticipated in the latter half of 2024. While the wait for these new features may have been prolonged, users can rest assured that Microsoft is working diligently to enhance the Windows 11 experience with a range of exciting additions and improvements on the horizon. Stay tuned for further updates as Microsoft gears up for a series of enhancements to elevate the Windows 11 operating system to new heights of functionality and user-friendliness.
