Tesla’s Futuristic Diner and Drive-In Theater Takes Shape in Los Angeles
Construction is well underway for Tesla’s highly anticipated 24-hour diner and drive-in theater in Los Angeles, marking a significant step forward in the electric vehicle manufacturer’s foray into entertainment and dining. The project, which broke ground in September following the submission of plans to local officials earlier in 2023, is set to revolutionize the concept of charging stations.
Recent photographs reveal the latest developments at the site, showcasing a two-story building with a striking metallic exterior. This futuristic Supercharging station is designed to offer both food and entertainment options, transforming the typical charging experience into a destination event.
According to reports from Bloomberg, the facility will feature 28 Supercharging stalls and two movie screens. These screens are set to display films lasting 15 to 30 minutes, aligning with the average time required to charge a Tesla vehicle. Guests will have the option to view the movies from rooftop seating or from the comfort of their Tesla vehicles.
The project’s roots trace back to 2018 when Tesla CEO Elon Musk first teased the concept, describing it as an “old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant.” Since then, Tesla has taken concrete steps towards realizing this vision, including filing an application with the US Trademark Office for restaurant services in 2021 and submitting plans for the 24-hour Supercharging station to Los Angeles officials in 2022.
Musk’s August 2023 announcement suggested that the diner could be operational later this year, potentially placing Tesla in the realm of immersive experiences—a sector currently dominated by entertainment giants like Disney. This move aligns with a broader industry trend, as exemplified by Netflix’s plans to open Netflix House venues in U.S. malls next year.
The project represents a significant evolution in Tesla’s charging infrastructure. While several Tesla charging stations already offer amenities such as vending machines and lounges, this new venture could transform charging stations into coveted destinations, potentially reshaping the electric vehicle charging landscape.
As construction progresses, industry observers are keenly watching to see how this innovative project will impact both the automotive and entertainment sectors. Tesla representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment on the development.
