Smart Thermostat Giant Tado Sparks Controversy with Proposed Monthly App Fee

Tado Tests Controversial App Fee for Smart Thermostat Users

Smart thermostat company Tado has sparked controversy by testing a potential monthly fee for app-based device control, a move unprecedented in the industry. The UK and European smart climate control leader recently launched its new Tado X product line, but it’s the company’s app fee test that’s drawing attention.

Tado users across Europe reported receiving notifications about an impending charge of £1 or €1 per month for app-based control of their devices. The notifications cited different implementation dates, with one UK customer mentioning May 1st, 2025, while a Reddit user in the Netherlands saw February 19th, 2025.

The company attributed the potential fee to increased operational costs. However, users would still have free access to their Tado systems through integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

Tado currently offers optional subscriptions for advanced features like auto-assist and intelligent energy shifting, priced between €3.99 to €5.99 monthly. The basic app functionality for scheduling and controlling the Tado system has always been free.

In response to user concerns, a Tado moderator clarified on the company’s community forum that the notification was merely a test, and no charges had been applied. Tado spokesperson Jason Collie initially declined to comment but later requested a correction, emphasizing the test nature of the notification.

This potential shift in Tado’s business model could have significant implications. Charging for previously free app control might negatively impact customer loyalty, potentially leading to customer attrition and reduced recommendations. The move also stands in contrast to industry norms, where basic app control is typically offered at no additional cost.

As smart home technology continues to evolve, Tado’s test highlights the ongoing challenge companies face in balancing operational costs with customer expectations. The industry will be watching closely to see if Tado moves forward with this controversial fee structure and how it might reshape the smart thermostat market.
