Slingshot AI Secures $30 Million in Funding for Mental Health AI
Slingshot AI, a startup focused on developing large-language models for mental health, has successfully raised approximately $30 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, according to multiple sources. The company, which launched earlier this year, has quickly attracted significant investor interest.
Following the initial round, Menlo Ventures reportedly made a fast-follow investment, further boosting Slingshot AI’s valuation. Sources indicate that the startup’s valuation exceeded $100 million after the Andreessen Horowitz-led round and reached $220 million post-Menlo Ventures investment.
The substantial funding reflects the broader trend of Silicon Valley’s enthusiasm for AI investments across various sectors. Mental health, in particular, has emerged as a significant opportunity, with the U.S. market expected to reach approximately $115 million this year.
Slingshot AI made its debut in May with the launch of Ash, an AI-powered chatbot designed for mental healthcare. Users can interact with Ash through speech or text within the app, which retains conversation history to assist users in addressing ongoing issues and achieving long-term goals.
The startup follows in the footsteps of Woebot, another AI chatbot for mental health that has raised about $123 million and received FDA breakthrough device designation for postpartum depression therapy. However, the mental healthcare sector is not without challenges, as evidenced by recent incidents such as the National Eating Disorder Association’s AI chatbot controversy.
As general-purpose generative AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT are increasingly utilized for mental health support, the field continues to evolve, yielding mixed results in supplementing traditional mental healthcare approaches.
Slingshot AI’s successful funding round underscores the growing interest in AI-driven mental health solutions and sets the stage for further developments in this rapidly expanding market.
