Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy Backs E-Bike Revolution with Skarper Investment
Sir Chris Hoy, the decorated British track cyclist, has thrown his weight behind the electric bike movement by investing in Skarper, a UK startup revolutionizing the e-bike industry. The company, which has raised £12.8 million since its inception in 2020, has begun its first production run of an innovative device that converts traditional bicycles into electric bikes.
Hoy, an early investor in Skarper, admits to initial skepticism about e-bikes but had a change of heart after experiencing one firsthand. “The pedal-assist feature is incredibly useful in certain situations,” Hoy stated, highlighting the benefits for commuters and the environment.
Skarper’s unique selling point is its click-on system, which attaches to a bike’s rear disc brake and can be easily removed. This design minimizes disruption to the bike’s original structure and balance, setting it apart from other conversion methods.
The system, primarily designed for disc-brake bikes, includes a DiskDrive rotor with an integrated gearbox. Hoy played a significant role in the design process, focusing on ride quality and handling. “We wanted to ensure the Skarper system enhances the cycling experience without compromising the bike’s integrity,” he explained.
Skarper’s unit boasts impressive features, including a 2.5-hour charge time, a range of up to 50km, and a top speed of 25km/h in the UK model. The company positions its product as a high-quality solution rather than a budget option.
Currently available only in the UK, Skarper has ambitious expansion plans. The company aims to enter mainland Europe in 2025, followed by the US market, where regulations allow for higher top speeds.
The system’s removability offers practical advantages, particularly in terms of security. Users can attach the Skarper unit to less valuable bikes, reducing theft risk while still benefiting from the high-quality motor.
As e-bikes continue to gain popularity, Skarper’s innovative approach, backed by a cycling legend, could mark a significant shift in the industry. With its blend of flexibility, quality, and practicality, Skarper is poised to make waves in the evolving landscape of urban transportation.
