Microsoft Announces Leadership Changes at Xbox Game Studios
Microsoft has unveiled significant leadership changes at Xbox Game Studios, with Craig Duncan promoted to head the division as Alan Hartman retires after more than three decades with the company. The transition follows Matt Booty’s recent promotion to president of game content and studios.
Duncan, who joined Xbox in 2011 to lead Rare Studio, brings extensive experience from previous roles at Codemasters, Midway Games, and Sumo Digital. Under his leadership, Rare achieved notable success with titles like Sea of Thieves. In his new position, Duncan will focus on delivering high-quality game experiences and investing in new intellectual property.
The leadership shift extends to Rare Studio, where Joe Neate and Jim Horth have been appointed as co-leads. They will continue overseeing Sea of Thieves development and the upcoming Everwild game, aiming to further elevate Rare’s growth and game development capabilities.
In a memo to staff, Matt Booty praised Hartman’s career and contributions to Xbox Game Studios, highlighting his role in building the Forza franchise and advancing gaming accessibility. Booty detailed the thorough selection process for new leadership, which considered both internal and external candidates while reaffirming the company’s commitment to maintaining the existing Xbox Game Studios leadership team.
Duncan will report directly to Matt Booty and join the Game Content and Studios leadership team. A transition period has been established to ensure a smooth leadership change, with the focus remaining on creating successful franchises and expanding player reach.
As Microsoft navigates this leadership transition, the gaming industry will be watching closely to see how these changes impact Xbox Game Studios’ future direction and output.
