A team of researchers have developed a remarkable new invention: a liquid metal robot that is capable of shapeshifting like the iconic Terminator from the movies. This robot has been designed to be able to jump, escape cages and more.
The technology behind this incredible feat is based on an alloy called galinstan, which consists primarily of gallium, indium and tin. It’s unique properties allow it to remain in liquid form at room temperature while still being able to hold its shape when subjected to electrical currents or magnets. The scientists use these forces in order control the movement and shape-shifting abilities of their robotic creation.
As well as having many potential applications for robotics research, this breakthrough could also lead us closer towards creating robots that are similar those seen in science fiction films such as The Terminator series; machines with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities that can move around autonomously and adapt their shapes according various situations they may encounter during operation. Although we’re not quite there yet technologically speaking, this latest development certainly takes us one step closer towards achieving our sci-fi dreams!
