Google Unveils First Smartphone Fully Powered by Gemini AI System
Google has announced its first smartphone fully powered by its artificial intelligence system, Gemini, along with a suite of new AI features coming to Android devices. This move positions Google to introduce its AI technology to consumers ahead of Apple’s anticipated AI push.
The tech giant’s latest offering, while not a significant revenue generator in its hardware business, could drive subscriptions to the Gemini AI program through the new Android features. Gemini boasts advanced capabilities, allowing users to interact naturally, understand intent, follow thoughts, and complete complex tasks.
One of Gemini’s key features is its ability to overlay on top of apps, enabling users to ask questions about on-screen content. This functionality will be available on hundreds of phone models from various device makers.
Gemini’s AI features include the ability to upload photos and check calendar availability, create reminders, draft emails, and generate images. It can also perform tasks using information from Google apps, such as creating workout routines based on emails from personal trainers or writing work bios using resumes stored in Google Drive.
The AI system extends its functionality to other Google apps like Maps, Flights, and Gmail, with plans to add support for third-party extensions in the future.
Google’s new Pixel 9 series of phones, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, will showcase these AI capabilities. The devices feature upgraded cameras, brighter screens, and come equipped with Google’s latest Tensor G4 processor and 16GB of RAM, crucial for running AI applications on smartphones.
Pricing for the new Pixel phones starts at $799 for the base model, with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold reaching $1,799. The Pixel 9 Pro comes with a complimentary year of the Gemini Advanced subscription, valued at $19.99 per month.
In addition to the smartphones, Google introduced the Pixel Watch 3, available in two sizes with larger screens than previous models. The smartwatch offers new features such as AI-powered workout recommendations and deeper integration with Google’s ecosystem.
As Google pushes forward with its AI initiatives, Apple is also developing its own AI system, Apple Intelligence, announced in June. However, the bulk of Apple’s AI features are not expected to launch until next year, potentially giving Google a head start in the AI-powered smartphone market.
