Former Teacher Turns Protein Powder Entrepreneur, Highlighting Challenges of Business Ownership
Jack Schrupp, a former educator, has successfully transitioned from teaching to entrepreneurship, founding the protein powder company Drink Wholesome. What began as a side project to address his own dietary needs has now grown into a seven-figure business in 2024.
Schrupp’s journey began in college when he started creating protein powder for sensitive stomachs. Initially blending recipes in his dorm room, he later partnered with a granola company for bulk production. The demand for easy-to-digest protein powder led to rapid growth, with the first inventory batch selling out quickly.
As the business expanded, Schrupp found himself struggling to balance his teaching career with the growing demands of Drink Wholesome. At 27, he made the difficult decision to leave teaching at the end of the 2023 school year to focus entirely on his business.
While entrepreneurship has provided Schrupp with the freedom of being his boss, he notes that it can also be isolating and lonely. The contrast between the community-driven environment of teaching and the solitary nature of running a business has been stark.
“Entrepreneurship can feel very solitary, with no immediate support or advice,” Schrupp explains. He advises aspiring entrepreneurs to consider the potential loneliness factor before pursuing this path.
Despite these challenges, Schrupp remains committed to providing quality products for his customers’ health and well-being. At 29, he is dedicated to growing Drink Wholesome but acknowledges the importance of regularly assessing his relationship with the business.
“Personal happiness and fulfillment are crucial for business success,” Schrupp emphasizes. He stresses the need for continuous self-evaluation and adaptation in the ever-changing landscape of entrepreneurship.
As Drink Wholesome continues to thrive, Schrupp’s story serves as a testament to the rewards and challenges of transitioning from a traditional career to business ownership.
