Former Corporate Lawyer Finds Fulfillment in Nonprofit Work
Priscilla Hamilton, a 33-year-old lawyer from New Rochelle, New York, has made a significant career shift from corporate law to nonprofit work, finding greater personal satisfaction in her new role.
Hamilton, who initially pursued a career in corporate law against her parents’ wishes for her to become a doctor, spent four years working at prestigious firms such as Fried Frank and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Her experience with Teach for America in Miami had sparked her interest in law, particularly after witnessing her students’ encounters with the legal system.
During her time in corporate law, Hamilton specialized in investment funds, facing long hours and high expectations. Despite the demanding nature of her work, she found solace in pro bono activities, which ultimately influenced her decision to transition to nonprofit law.
The turning point came at the beginning of 2023 when Hamilton decided to leave corporate law. After careful consideration and conversations with influential women at a wellness resort, she solidified her decision to make the switch in early 2024, following the receipt of her year-end bonus.
In mid-April, Hamilton began working at a nonprofit organization in the Bronx, focusing on assisting survivors of domestic violence. Her new role involves providing legal support, advice, and connecting clients with essential services. Hamilton describes her current work as emotionally fulfilling and liberating, appreciating the supportive environment and positive reinforcement from her supervisors.
The career change has brought significant financial adjustments for Hamilton. Her salary decreased from approximately $315,000 as a fourth-year associate to $83,000 in her nonprofit position. Despite the substantial pay cut, Hamilton’s previous savings and potential income from her TikTok platform have helped maintain her financial stability.
Reflecting on her journey, Hamilton believes that her time in corporate law provided valuable financial security, enabling her to pursue work aligned with her passions and mental health priorities. She encourages others to consider a similar path, emphasizing the importance of financial freedom in making career choices that prioritize personal fulfillment.
