Emirates Secures Five Airbus A380s in $200 Million Deal
Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, has agreed to purchase five Airbus A380 superjumbo jets for $200 million, signaling a resurgence in popularity for the double-decker aircraft in the post-pandemic era. The deal also provides Emirates with increased flexibility amid ongoing delays to the Boeing 777X program.
As the world’s largest operator of the Airbus A380, Emirates currently boasts a fleet of 118 of these aircraft. The airline had previously leased seven A380s from Doric Nimrod Air Two Limited in 2011. Last year, Emirates acquired two of these jets as their leases expired, and now plans to purchase the remaining five as their leases conclude this year.
The A380 has experienced a notable comeback following the COVID-19 pandemic. While some airlines, including Lufthansa and Air France, initially retired their A380s due to pandemic-related disruptions and concerns over high fuel costs, there has been a shift in sentiment. Lufthansa has since reactivated eight of its 14 A380s, and Qatar Airways is extending plans for its fleet of 10 A380s, even developing a new first-class cabin.
The decision to acquire these A380s may also be influenced by delays in the Boeing 777X program. Qatar Airways CEO has cited these delays as a factor in extending A380 operations. Both Qatar Airways and Emirates have substantial orders for the 777X, with 74 and 262 aircraft on order, respectively.
Boeing’s 777X program has faced significant setbacks, with the initial entry into service pushed from 2020 to 2025. Emirates’ President Tim Clark has expressed expectations of delivery as late as 2026, citing issues discovered during flight tests.
This new A380 deal provides Emirates with additional operational flexibility in the face of potential further delays to the 777X. It also ensures the continued presence of these iconic superjumbo jets in Emirates’ fleet for the foreseeable future.
One of the five A380s included in the deal, A6-EDX, has been in storage since 2020 and may be utilized for spare parts to extend the operational life of the A380 fleet. This strategic move underscores Emirates’ commitment to maintaining its position as the premier operator of the Airbus A380.
