Ayaneo 3: Modular Handheld PC Challenges Steam Deck with Customizable Features

Ayaneo Unveils Modular Handheld PC with Customizable Features

Ayaneo, known for its visually striking handheld PCs, has announced its latest offering, the Ayaneo 3. This new device aims to compete with popular alternatives like the Steam Deck, while introducing innovative features and a modular design.

The Ayaneo 3, starting at $900, boasts several notable improvements over its predecessors. It features USB4 ports, OcuLink connectivity, RGB-ringed Hall effect joysticks, and multiple screen options. However, the most significant advancement is its modular design, allowing users to customize the joystick and button layout.

Marketed as “the world’s first modular handheld,” the Ayaneo 3 comes with a basic module for adjusting the joystick and button orientation. An optional “Magic Module” kit offers six additional modules for further customization, including the ability to swap joysticks, add microswitch pads, and alter button feel.

Technically, the base model is equipped with a Ryzen 8840U processor, 16GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 512GB storage. Customers can choose between OLED and IPS screen options. The OLED variant features a 1080p 144Hz HDR display with 800 nits brightness and 110% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. The IPS option offers a 120Hz, 500-nit screen with native landscape 1080p resolution and 100% sRGB coverage.

Additional features include dual USB4 ports with 65W PD charging, an Oculink port for eGPUs and M.2 2280 SSD support, a dedicated hardware mode switch, and new trigger locks for Hall effect triggers.

Despite its impressive specifications, some concerns have been raised. The electronic latching system for modules requires software button activation, which may affect user experience. Battery life is another potential issue, with the device sporting a 49-watt-hour battery, smaller than some competitors like the Asus ROG Ally X.

The Ayaneo 3 is currently available for pre-order on Indiegogo, with shipping expected by the end of April. While Ayaneo has a track record of delivering on previous crowdfunded projects, potential buyers should be aware of the risks associated with such campaigns.

As the handheld PC market continues to evolve, the Ayaneo 3’s ambitious design and customizable features may set a new standard for portable gaming devices. However, its higher price point and potential battery limitations could impact its competitiveness in an increasingly crowded market.
