Green Ammonia Startup Amogy Seeks $90 Million in Latest Funding Round
Amogy, a pioneering green ammonia startup, has launched a new funding round with a target of $90 million, having already secured $11.2 million. This latest financial endeavor comes on the heels of the company’s substantial $139 million Series B-1 round completed in March 2023.
The reduced funding target reflects the current challenging investment landscape for middle-stage climate startups. Amogy has not provided official comments regarding the ongoing funding round.
The company’s innovative approach focuses on various transportation sectors, including maritime shipping, long-haul trucking, and agriculture. Amogy has successfully tested its ammonia-to-power technology in a range of vehicles, from retrofitted tugboats to semi-tractors and farm equipment.
Green ammonia is gaining traction as a potential solution for long-distance transportation, with the ability to be used in modified internal combustion engines. Traditional ammonia usage typically requires a pilot fuel like diesel or biofuel for ignition, which can reduce carbon emissions but still produce nitrogen oxides.
Amogy sets itself apart by employing a unique method that doesn’t involve burning ammonia. Instead, the company’s technology cracks ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen. The nitrogen is safely released as a harmless gas, while the hydrogen is utilized in a fuel cell to generate electricity and water. This innovative approach eliminates the need for a pilot fuel, positioning Amogy’s solution as inherently zero-carbon.
While Amogy’s technology doesn’t leverage existing internal combustion engines, it may find particular appeal in sectors like maritime shipping. The maritime industry has set an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning well with Amogy’s zero-carbon technology.
As the green transportation sector continues to evolve, Amogy’s progress and the outcome of this funding round will be closely watched by industry observers and potential investors alike.
