AI Chatbot Company Restricts Access for Minors Amid Legal Challenges
Character.AI, a Google-backed AI chatbot company, has implemented new restrictions on its platform, preventing users under 18 from accessing popular chatbots based on fictional characters and real-life figures. This move comes as the company faces lawsuits related to the welfare of minors using its service.
Recent testing has revealed that minors are now unable to interact with chatbots from popular franchises such as “The Twilight Saga” and “The Hunger Games,” as well as those based on public figures like Elon Musk and Selena Gomez. Adult users, however, can still access these chatbots without limitations, though the age verification process can be easily circumvented.
The company is currently embroiled in two lawsuits filed in Florida and Texas, alleging that the platform exposed minors to harmful content. The Florida case claims that a 14-year-old’s suicide was linked to interactions with a chatbot based on the “Game of Thrones” character Daenerys Targaryen. In Texas, a lawsuit alleges that a teenager was groomed by chatbots, including one styled after singer Billie Eilish, leading to self-harm and family conflict.
Experts have raised concerns about the vulnerability of minors to manipulation by AI chatbots. A recent study by Google DeepMind highlighted age as a critical risk factor for AI-related harms, noting that children are more easily influenced than adults. The study also suggested that relationships with AI companions increase susceptibility to manipulation.
Character.AI has not commented on the new restrictions but previously announced plans for safety updates targeting under-18 users. These planned changes include parental controls, content filters, time-spent notifications, and a new model for minor users’ accounts. The company has also enhanced disclaimers and increased moderation efforts, though age verification remains a challenge.
The restrictions come in the wake of copyright concerns, with Character.AI removing bots based on copyrighted characters from Warner Bros. Discovery in December, sparking user backlash. The current limitations on cultural characters and public figures may be an attempt to mitigate legal liability related to potential harm to minors.
As the AI chatbot industry continues to evolve, the immersive nature of parasocial relationships with AI companions poses potential risks, especially for younger users. The ongoing legal challenges and safety measures implemented by Character.AI highlight the complex issues surrounding AI interaction and user protection in this rapidly growing field.
