Sandy Ganzell’s puzzle features a densely packed theme that’s sure to please solvers of all ages. There are three entries in the grid that include the names of barnyard animals and three more entries that represent the sounds those animals make. When a clue uses informal language (as we see in the clue “Rank between sarge and cap’n”), it means that the entry is also informal. A person occupying the rank between a sergeant and a captain is a lieutenant, whom you might informally call LOOIE. In this case, we’re not looking for something useful to have lying around, but rather a GLOVE, which is good to have on your literal hand in cold weather. . . .
