Alpine, the renowned French automotive manufacturer, has recently taken the wraps off its latest creation – the Alpine A290. This electric hot hatchback is not just any ordinary car; it’s a sporty alternative to the popular Renault 5, upon which it is based. The A290 boasts a striking design that sets it apart from its sibling, with bulging wheel arches that accommodate stylish 19-inch alloys, giving it a more aggressive and athletic stance. Antony Villain, the Vice President of Alpine Design, highlighted how the A290 draws inspiration from the iconic A110 internal-combustion sports car, aiming to capture the essence of small sports cars and hot hatches.
Under the hood, the Alpine A290 is equipped with a 52 kWh battery pack, similar to the one found in the Renault 5, providing a claimed range of up to 236 miles on a single charge. Despite being an electric vehicle, Alpine has focused on keeping the weight of the A290 low, tipping the scales at 1,479 kg. To enhance performance, the car features bespoke suspension and tires, along with new Brembo brakes that have been fine-tuned to mimic the pedal feel of the A110 sports car.
Step inside the A290, and you’ll be greeted by a modern and minimalist interior, complete with a pair of digital displays positioned behind a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel. Alpine has wisely included physical controls for the air conditioning, ensuring that drivers can make adjustments without taking their eyes off the road. The driver display measures 10.1 inches, while the infotainment touchscreen, which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, boasts a slightly larger size of 10.25 inches.
When it comes to the driving experience, Alpine has opted not to create a completely new soundtrack for the A290. Instead, drivers have the option to choose from two different augmented audio settings, known as Alpine Drive Sound. These settings offer varying tones and intensities based on the motor’s sounds, adding an element of customization to the driving experience. With an expected price range of £35,000 to £40,000, the Alpine A290 is set to hit the market later this year, offering enthusiasts a compelling blend of style, performance, and electric efficiency.
In a world where electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, the Alpine A290 stands out as a unique and exciting option for those seeking a sporty and stylish ride. With its blend of cutting-edge technology, performance enhancements, and design cues borrowed from its iconic predecessors, the A290 is poised to make a splash in the competitive hot hatchback segment. So, if you’re in the market for a thrilling driving experience that doesn’t compromise on style or sustainability, keep an eye out for the Alpine A290 hitting the streets soon!
