SpaceX’s Polar Expedition Takes Flight: Cryptocurrency Mogul Funds Groundbreaking Mission
In a groundbreaking development for private space exploration, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Chun Wang has purchased a SpaceX multi-day flight, set to become the first crewed space mission in polar orbit. The mission, dubbed “Fram2” after the 19th-century polar expedition ship, is scheduled to launch later this year aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
Wang, a self-described “nomadic” citizen of Malta born in Tianjin, China, has invited three Arctic specialists to join him on this unprecedented journey: Norwegian filmmaker Jannicke Mikkelsen, Australian explorer Eric Philips, and German researcher Rabea Rogge. The crew will utilize the thrice-flown Dragon capsule named Endurance, previously seen during NASA’s Crew-3 mission.
While SpaceX does not publicly disclose pricing for crewed missions, industry experts estimate the cost to be upwards of $200 million. Wang confirmed his financial backing of the mission but declined to specify the amount. His substantial net worth, reportedly tied to cryptocurrency mining, includes claims of having mined 7,700 bitcoin, currently valued at approximately $450 million.
The Fram2 mission plans to spend three to five days in orbit, flying end-to-end over the Earth. The spacecraft will feature a “cupola” window, allowing for unprecedented views of our planet. Beyond its exploratory nature, the mission aims to conduct research on the upper atmosphere and study the effects of spaceflight on the human body.
Crew training has already commenced, with team members completing “extreme environment” preparation in Alaska alongside SpaceX’s standard protocols. Mikkelsen, initially skeptical of Wang’s proposal, now aims to create an immersive production to share the experience with a wider audience.
Wang emphasized his goal of making space missions feel more accessible to the general public, stating, “We want to make the door wider for personal space missions.”
As private polar expeditions reach new heights, quite literally, the Fram2 mission represents a significant milestone in the democratization of space travel, albeit currently limited to ultra-high-net-worth individuals. The success of this venture could pave the way for future privately funded space exploration initiatives, potentially reshaping the landscape of human spaceflight.
