Vice President Kamala Harris Unveils Plan to Combat Food Price Gouging
Vice President Kamala Harris is set to announce a comprehensive plan to ban price gouging on food and groceries, marking a significant step in her economic policy platform. The announcement, scheduled to be made during a campaign speech in North Carolina, comes as part of a broader initiative to address rising costs for American consumers.
The centerpiece of Harris’ proposal is a “first-ever federal ban” on price gouging for groceries and food items. This measure aims to prevent companies from excessively raising prices on essential goods. Harris plans to implement this ban within her first 100 days in office and will call on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to penalize non-compliant companies.
This move aligns with previous efforts by Democratic lawmakers to tackle corporate price gouging. In February, Senator Elizabeth Warren and colleagues reintroduced the Price Gouging Prevention Act of 2024, which would empower the FTC to enforce a federal ban on “excessive price increases.”
However, the plan is likely to face opposition from Republican lawmakers. GOP Senator Rick Scott has already criticized the proposal, labeling it as “big government on steroids” and expressing concerns about government interference in business pricing.
In addition to the price gouging ban, Harris’ economic plan includes measures to restore the child tax credit and provide parents with $6,000 for their child’s first year of life. The Vice President is also expected to announce initiatives aimed at lowering housing and drug costs.
This announcement represents the most detailed insight into Harris’ economic platform to date. Further elaboration on these policies is anticipated at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
As the 2024 election campaign intensifies, economic policies are likely to remain a central topic of debate. Harris has agreed to face off against former President Donald Trump in a debate scheduled for September 10, where these economic proposals are expected to be thoroughly discussed.
