Vice President Harris Unveils Economic Agenda, Targets Price Gouging and Housing Affordability
Vice President Kamala Harris presented her economic agenda during a speech in Raleigh, North Carolina, focusing on key issues such as price gouging, housing affordability, and prescription drug costs.
In her address, Harris proposed a federal ban on price gouging for groceries, a move aimed at addressing the 25% increase in food prices since the pandemic. While grocery prices have recently stabilized, rising only 1.1% in the past year, the Vice President emphasized the need for consumer protection.
Harris also announced a plan to provide $25,000 in down payment assistance for certain first-time homebuyers. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address America’s housing shortage, with a goal of building 3 million new homes and rentals by the end of her first term.
The Vice President took aim at former President Donald Trump’s economic platform, particularly his proposed tariffs. Harris argued that these tariffs would effectively act as a national sales tax on everyday products. Economic analyses support this claim, with the Tax Policy Center estimating a 1.8% reduction in average incomes for the top 60% of earners.
On healthcare, Harris promised to lower the cost of insulin and prescription drugs, referencing the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Recent negotiations with drug manufacturers are expected to save taxpayers billions by reducing list prices for some of Medicare’s costliest medications.
As the 2024 election approaches, Harris’s economic agenda sets a clear contrast with her potential Republican opponents, focusing on consumer protection, housing affordability, and healthcare costs.
