Seizures of eggs smuggled across the US border have risen by over 100% as a result of rising egg prices in the US.
US egg prices were up 60% in December 2021 compared to the previous year. Between 1 October and 31 December alone, egg and poultry seizures rose 108%, according to Department of Agriculture statistics.
The high prices have led some US residents to cross the border to Mexico, where eggs can be bought for half the price. However, smuggling eggs from Mexico or Canada can result in fines of up to $10,000. Officials warn that attempts to smuggle eggs across the border can result in fines of up to $10,000 (£8,140).
