American Airlines expects to be profitable again in the second quarter for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic without government aid. CEO Robert Isom outlined the summer goals while reporting second-quarter earnings in which revenues were still down 16% to the same period in 2019. United Airlines, which reported earnings on Wednesday, made similar predictions about being profitable over the next three months. American said it has added 12,000 employees since last summer to handle the rush of passengers it expects this year, which will need as it plans to fly a schedule 25% larger than any of its competitors. American did make a $19 million profit in the last time it saw positive earnings results in 2021, but that was aided by $1.4 billion . . .
