Samsung and Google Launch Eclipsa Audio: A New Open-Source 3D Sound Rival to Dolby Atmos

Samsung and Google Unveil Eclipsa Audio, New 3D Sound Format

In a move set to shake up the audio industry, Samsung and Google have announced Eclipsa Audio, a groundbreaking 3D audio format. The new technology will be supported on YouTube videos and Samsung’s 2025 lineup of TVs and soundbars, positioning itself as a free alternative to Dolby Atmos.

This development marks Samsung’s latest competitive push in the audiovisual space. The tech giant has historically avoided supporting Dolby Vision HDR, instead promoting HDR10 Plus as an alternative. Eclipsa Audio appears to be a similar strategic move in the audio domain.

Eclipsa Audio boasts impressive features, supporting 3D audio experiences by adjusting sound location, intensity, and spatial reflections. It offers an open-source framework for 3D audio, covering the entire process from creation to playback.

The partnership between Samsung and Google for this spatial audio technology was initially announced in 2023 under the name Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF). The project has since been adopted by the Alliance for Open Media, a consortium that includes major tech companies.

Industry experts speculate that if companies like Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Netflix throw their support behind Eclipsa Audio, it could see widespread adoption. However, some draw parallels to the slow adoption of the AV1 video codec, suggesting that industry-wide acceptance may take time.

To ensure consistent audio quality across devices, Samsung and Google are creating a certification program in collaboration with the Telecommunications Technology Association. This process mirrors similar quality assurance measures implemented by Dolby and THX.

While many details remain under wraps, industry insiders anticipate more information to be revealed at CES 2025. As the audio landscape continues to evolve, Eclipsa Audio stands poised to potentially redefine immersive sound experiences for consumers worldwide.
