Tesla Unveils Ambitious Roadmap for Full Self-Driving System
Tesla has announced an updated roadmap for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) advanced driver-assist system, revealing plans for significant expansions and improvements. The electric vehicle manufacturer is set to launch FSD in the Cybertruck later this month, followed by a more robust v13 update in October. Additionally, Tesla aims to introduce FSD in Europe and China within the first quarter of next year, pending regulatory approval.
The Cybertruck, which began deliveries over nine months ago, initially lacked FSD and basic Autopilot features like lane-keeping. Tesla plans to address this in September, starting with the introduction of Autopark, allowing Cybertrucks to automatically pull into visible parking spots.
Tesla’s AI team has outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the coming months. September will see the release of v12.5.2, promising approximately three times improved miles between necessary interventions. This update will run on the AI3 computer with unified models for AI3 and AI4. The company also plans to introduce “Actually Smart Summon” and eye-tracking capabilities with sunglasses.
In a move that boosted its share price, Tesla announced plans to expand FSD to international markets, specifically Europe and China. However, the company faces challenges in the European Union, where preapproval from safety regulators is required. Tesla must demonstrate that FSD is at least as safe as human drivers, a task complicated by reports linking FSD and Autopilot to crashes and deaths in the United States.
In China, Tesla has initiated the registration process for FSD with local regulators and has begun internal testing. The company faces competition from Chinese automakers who are launching their own self-driving technologies.
Looking ahead, Tesla plans to release a supervised FSD v12 update to validate its camera-only approach. The v13 update, scheduled for October, promises “6 times improved miles between necessary interventions.” Additional updates include the release of Actually Smart Summon, eye tracking with sunglasses this month, and the addition of FSD park, unpark, and reverse abilities in October.
As Tesla continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology, industry observers and regulators will be closely watching the implementation and safety outcomes of these ambitious plans.
